The Seven Deadly Sins

Inscribed are the words "Know thyself" at the Oracle at Delphi, and the thrum the ages wise men have identified "The Seven Deadly Sins " they are: Pride, Avarice/Greed, Envy, Wrath/Anger, Lust, Gluttony, and Sloth which have been the cause of our self destruction.

These all seem to have a common element in that they occur when we let out Ego control our actions rather than our intellect. The immediate gratification of our own short term wants which usually cause problems for our selves and others later on.

We can bring our selves happiness by doing good stuff, either because of an afterlife or immortalizing our having been by leaving the world better because of us.
So how does it work and what can we do about it?

Pride
Pride and vanity are competitive. Humility is Seeing ourselves as we really are with out and not comparing ourselves to others.
Avarice/Greed
Greed wants to get more than its "fair share", Think not More, but Enough. Generosity is giving without expectations of the other person. let others get credit or praise.
Envy
Envy resents what others receive. Love actively seeks the good of others.
Wrath/Anger
Anger a first reaction to problems, Impatience, fault finding. Kindness is the tender approach, having patience and compassion.
Lust
Lust, the self-destructive drive for pleasure. Self control prevents desire for pleasure from controlling our lives.
Gluttony
Gluttony is indulging in more than is good for us. Temperance accepts the natural limits of pleasures and preserves the natural balance.
Sloth
Sloth is laxness and complacency. Zeal is the energetic response which puts zeal in life.
