Amazons
Amazons are female warriors and are armed with spear and shield. Often a Persian bow and quiver and a battleaxe. The Amazons were skilled horsewomen. Amazons were very brave, daring and fearless combatants, only the most famous Greek heroes as Heracles, Achilleus and Theseus were capable to defeat them.

Amazons dates back to 700 BC. The fortress of the Amazons was in the famous Persian town of Themiskyra. In Greek mythology, Amazons were a warlike tribe of women descended from the god of war, Ares and the naiad Harmonia. They originated from the area around the Caucasus Range and settled on the bank of the Thermodon River in Pontus, Asia Minor and founded the town of Themiscyra on the coast of the Euxine (on the Black Sea coast of Turkey).

Besides being courageous and bold, they were also looked upon as warriors with dignity. Amazons are never shown as cruel, prideful or cowardly. Amazons bring in their injured warriors, risking their own life for helping others.

Amazons would often mate with a nobel foe because of their strong desire to obtain children from so notable a race to raisw as Amazons.

Thalestris The Amazon queen Thalestris visited Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) during one of his Asian campaigns, wishing to have a daughter by such a famous general. She stayed with him for 13 days before returning.

  • Why the women warriors where called "Amazons" Some Theories
  • from a Greek word "amazon" meaning "without breast"
  • from Sanskrit "Uma-soona", meaning Uma's children. Uma was a Goddess worshipped in India and vicinity, once containing races of matriarchical societies.
  • from an Armenian word meaning "moon woman". Artemis (the deity the Amazons worshipped) was the Goddess of the moon as well as the hunt, so her followers may have been referred to as the moon women.
  • The Scythians called the Amazons "Oiorpata" which means "man killer". (Oior=man pata=to kill.) this is how ancient historian Herodotus referred to Amazons.
  • the Amazon itself may have been named after them. Female warriors of the Tapuyas in South America attacked Orellana, a 16th century Spanish explorer. Legend has it that he named the area Amazon, after the ancient women warriors.
