for all times. Cleopatra was the queen of Egypt and almost queen of the
world. Cleopatra played a dangerous game, against the most powerful men in
the world ... and ... almost won. Cleopatra's motivation has fascinated people
for centuries. Some consider her to be ambitious, others consider her to be
dedicated to her duty to her country, her family and her children. Cleopatra lived in Alexander a magnificent
city in Egypt on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Today little remains of
his ancient capital. Almost all had been destroyed by centuries of war, fire
and submerged by a tidal waves and earthquakes in 335 A.D. The Pharos was Egypt's most spectacular
structures and Cleopatra's showplace where she often stayed, and left from in
her royal barge. the island and the royal city offers insights into the
enigmatic character of Cleopatra herself. At that time Egypt was on the verge of being
taken over by Rome. Two powerful leaders are trying to get to power of the
Roman Empire; Pompejus and Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar was highly impressed by the
Pharos, and said "whoever wants to conquer Egypt has to conquer Alexandria,
and whoever want to conquer Alexandria has to conquer the harbor of
Alexandria." Cleopatra decides to go to Rome with Caesar.
After Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, Cleopatra lost her protector, she
fears for her life and decides to return to Egypt. Before leaving, she meets
Antony who promises her to protect her. Cleopatra seduced Mark Anthony. This same year Cleopatra gave birth to twins, Cleopatra Selene and later another child by Antony, Ptolemy Philadelphus. Octavian was in the power struggle and accused
Cleopatra of witchcraft in controlling Marc Anthony and used this as an
excuse to attack Egypt. Octavian took over Alexandria, captured
Cleopatra and intended to use her to show the greater strength of Rome. |
