Cleopatra's children

Cleopatra was a fascinating person, she was so complex she could never be cast in any stereotype.
In some ways she was ambitious, in other ways a great leader concerned about her people of Egypt. She was kind when she want to be, vicious when she had to be. A paradox!

So great were her acomplishments, that it is hard to remember she was a woman, a mother who loved her children, a parent who would give all (in fact did) for those she cared for.

The Queen and the consul decide to make a trip on the Nile Cleopatra is pregnant. June, 23rd 47 bc, Cleopatra has a baby; (Ptolemy Caesar) also called Caesarion meaning "little Caesar." Caesar had already an adopted child, Octavianus. Caesarion is rapidly accepted by the Egyptian people as Amon-Re's child.

When Caesar returned to Rome, she followed him with their baby and lived in Caesar's villa outside of Rome, where he visited her constantly.

After Caesar's murder, Cleopatra fled Rome and returned home to Alexandria. She felt her life, as well as that of her child, was in great danger. Caesarion became the figure head Pharoh (who had to be a man).

In 41, Antony comes to Egypt. He is always with Cleopatra, they are inseparable. In 40, Antony has to leave Egypt because a part of his territory has been conquered by Parthes. 6 month later, Cleopatra borns twins:(Cleopatra Selene and Alexander Helios) Cleopatra Selene (= moon) and Alexander Helios (Sun).

Antony was already married before going to Egypt. His wife had called him back.

Antony leaves his wife (who had three kids) to go to Antioch. He wants to meet Cleopatra again. She also seems to be again in love with Antony because she borns a new son: Ptolemaeus Filadelfos.

In 32 to 31 BC, Antony finally divorced hia wife, Octavia the sister of Octavian.
Octavianus is now in Alexandria, Marc Anthony falls on his sword, he still wants to capture Cleopatra alive. He also fears that she would let her mausoleum burn into flames to avoid her treasury to be stolen. He wants her alive to take her to Rome, to show his superiority and his victory.

Cleopatra stays in her mausoleum, Octavianus sends of his man who manages to enter the mausoleum and capture Cleopatra. The mausoleum is now Cleopatra's prison, it's a safe place to hold her captive until the long way back to Rome.

Cleopatra's children are also captured except Caesarion who fled to the south. She really wants to die but she has no weapon to kill herself. She begins a hunger strike, she rapidly weakens but Octavianus threatens her: if she dies, her children will be killed. She accepts to eat again but she's still weak.

Octavianus is now persuaded that she wants to stay alive. The departure for Rome is in three days, just enough for Cleopatra to prepare her suicide. She asks her servants Iras and Charmion to bring her a snake in a fruit basket.

What ever happened to them after their parents died because of Octavian?

Caesarion was betrayed by his tutor, Rhodon, on their way out of Egypt. He was then killed on Octavian's orders. After Cleopatra's death, Caesarion was strangled

The other children (Seline "The Moon" and Helios "The Sun" were raised by Antony's wife, Octavia. Octavia was the sister of Octavian.

Octavia had always been loyal to Marc Antony, apparently even after the divorce

Strange story.
