CLEOPATRA: Queen of the Nile

Cleopatra-VII Ptolemaic Dynasty
Cleopatra was born 69 BC, had two older sisters, Cleopatra VI and Berenice IV and a younger sister, Arsinoe IV. There were also two younger brothers. Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV.

In the spring of 51 BC, Ptolemy Auletes died and left his kingdom in his will to his eighteen year old daughter, Cleopatra, and her twelve year old brother Ptolemy XIII.

By Egyptian law, Cleopatra was forced to have a consort, who was either a brother or a son, no matter what age, throughout her reign. She was married to her younger brother Ptolemy XIII when he was twelve.

When Cleopatra VII ascended the Egyptian throne, she was only seventeen. She reigned as Queen Philopator and Pharaoh between 51 and 30 BC, and died at the age of 39. The Alexandrian War started when Pothinus surrounded Caesar in Alexandria with twenty thousand men. Caesar executed Pothinus and Ptolemy XIII drowned in the Nile while trying to escape. Because of his death, Cleopatra was now the sole ruler of Egypt.

Cleopatra was brilliant and devoted to her country. She was a quick-witted woman who was fluent in nine languages, (Latin was not one of them). She was a mathematician and a very good businesswoman. She had a genuine respect for Caesar, whose intelligence and wit matched her own. She had a charismatic personality, was a born leader and an ambitious monarch.

Julius Caesar left Rome for Alexandria in 48 BC. During his stay in the Palace, he received the most famous gift in history: an oriental carpet... with a 22 year old Cleopatra wrapped in.

Cleopatra and Caesar went for a two month on a trip up the Nile together. Cleoptara was being worshipped as Pharaoh, an honor beyond Caesar's reach.

They became lovers, and she bore him a son. Caesarion. Caesar was killed in a conspiracy by his Senators.

Rome split between Mark Antony and Octavian. When Mark Antony seemed to prevail, she supported him and, shortly after, they too became lovers. Mark Antony's alliance with Cleopatra angered Rome even more.

Octavian declared war on Cleopatra, and defeated Egypt. He arrived in Alexandria and easily defeated Mark Antony. Antony was asked to be taken to Cleopatra. He died in her arms and was buried as a King.

Cleopatra captured in 30 BC. and taken to Ocatvian and the Roman Emperor who had no interest in negotiation with the Egyptian Queen. Realizing that her end is close, she decided to put an end to her life. She killed herself with the bite of an asp (Deadly Snake), With the death of Cleopatra, Egyptian history was ended.

Egypt was now a Roman province. Egyptian Monarchs gave way to Roman Emperors, and Cleopatra's death gave way to the rise of Rome.
Cleopatra was the last Pharaoh.
