Classic Angels

While not actually angels,
The Greco Roman Myths
represent angel like
qualities such as:

The Birth Of Venus

Sandro Botticelli - The Birth of Venus
c. 1485-86 canvas, 67 7/8 x 109 5/8 in
This is steeped in Greek mythology
The other figures are nymphs or gods.
the god Uranus is her father
(Don't ask)

The Nymph Galatea

Raphael - The nymph Galatea
c. 1512-14 Fresco, 116 x 88 1/2 in

Raphael was inspired by a poem (by
Angelo Poliziano) which had also
helped to inspire Botticelli's Birth
of Venus.

It describes how the clumsy giant
Polyphemus sings a love song to the
fair sea-nymph Galatea and how she
rides across the waves in a chariot
drawn by two dolphins,

Raphael was asked where he found a
model of such beauty. He replied
that he did not copy any specific
model but rather followed 'a certain
idea' he had formed in his mind.

La Primavera - The Allegory of Spring

La Primavera 1477-78; "Allegory of Spring"
