The Face in the Mask

The Face in the Mask

The theater at night is ghostly dark and quiet in stark contract to the bright lights and thundering applause during the show. Sara the stage hand liked to work alone since she felt she was always being examined and had to pretend in social situations.

Sara was picking up one night and noticed the classic comedy and Tragedy masks, trying them on, looking in the mirror. While wearing the comedy mask, Sara felt happy and the Tragedy mask made her sad. Sara thought the mirror said this at first - Than she was sure of it.

The mirror talked to Sara in her own face and voice. You see Sara, said the mirror, happiness or sadness are in how you think about events. Events can not determine our mood. As said in Milton's Paradise Lost " The mind is its own place, and in it self Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n." (Sara had not read Paradise Lost)" .

The mirror continued, Not only can we choose our mood, but acting "as if" we are happy, by some strange way, tells out mind that we "are happy", and that makes it so. In a flash, Sara realized that she just had to Choose to be happy.

Sara was feeling pretty good as she made her usual stop at the all-night restaurant She was so overjoyed that Sara started to talk with the waitress, starting with I was saying to my self today Well, not really a lie , that we have control of our mood.

The waitress listened intently, muttering I never knew as tears welled up in her eyes. Sara had just made her First real friend.
