OCEANIDS: --------- There were 3000 Oceanids, and they were all the Nymphs of the Ocean. Their father was the Titan Oceanus and mother was the Titaness Tethys. The Pleiades: ------------- There were seven Pleiades, and you can find them in the stars Their names were: ~ Maia -- Mother, Nurse ~ Alcyone -- Queen who wards off evil and storms. ~ Electra -- Amber, Shining, Bright" ~ Celæno -- Swarthy. ~ Taygeta -- Long-necked. ~ Sterope or Asterope -- Lightening, Twinkling, Sun-face. ~ Merope -- Eloquent, Mortal, Bee-eater. They were the daughters of Pleione (an Oceanid) and Atlas. Pleione (means sailing queen) and her daughters would be the (sailing ones), an other interpertation means a (flock of doves). They waited on Artemis with their half-sisters the Hyades and with them were called the Atalantides, Dodonides, and Nysiades. They were chased by Orion for seven years but got away because Zeus granted their wish to be changed them into doves. Calypso ------- Calypso was the daughter of Atlas. Calypso than falls in love with Odysseus and keeps him prisoner for seven years, during this time they are intimate however Odysseus stays loyal to Penelope. Eventually Zeus orders Calypso to set Odysseus her to set him free. By the time Odysseus gets back home Penelope (thinking Odysseus was dead) offers to marry what ever suitor wins against the others. Meanwhile Odysseus arives dressed as a begger. (of course Odysseus kicks every bodys ass) NAIADES: --------- The Naiades were the nymphs of freshwater streams rivers and lakes. Some are associated with Artemis. The Naiades were the daughters of rivergods. They had extremely long lifetimes, but they were not considered immortal, and were believed to have sat in on the Gods discussions on Olympus. There were 5 types of Naiades: -------------------------------- ~ Pegaiai -- the Nymphs of Springs ~ Krinaia -- the Nymphs of Fountains ~ Potameides -- the Nymphs of Rivers and Streams ~ Limnades or Limnatides -- the Nymphs of Lakes ~ Eleionomai -- the Nymphs of Marshes Naiades would fall in love and marry humans. Hylas was a famous case. Nereids -------- The Nereids were the 50 daughters of Nereus (the Sea) and Doris The were the Nymphs of the Sea One stories says that when they performed a dance on the island of Naxos; Poseidon decided to claim Amphitrite as his bride. and Poseidon was always faithful to her (he never was faithful to women before) A lot of events in mythology were influenced in some way by Nereids like Arethusa Cydippe Galatea and Psamathe.
