Oceanides - nymphs of the oceans.
  • The nymph in Greek mythology largely decendents of the titans.
  • The nymph in Greek mythology were female divinity, immortal or at least long-lived, associated with many natural objects or places. They play a large role in explaining how certain things happend in mythology

  • Some represented specific places. For example, the acheloids of the River Achelous.
  • Some were associated with general graphicial things:
  • Oreads with mountains.
  • Naiads with bodies of fresh water.
  • Nereids with the Mediterranean
  • Oceanids with the ocean
  • Dryads with trees. One type of dryad was the hamadryads, who lived and died with a particular tree.
  • Nymphs were regarded as young, beautiful, musical.
  • Nymphs were always amorous and mated quite often with Gods and heros.
