![]() He was the first child of Geb and Nut. Osiris, (a tall, handsome, charismatic man) succeeded his father Geb as the reigning power of Egypt when Geb retired into the heavens. He married his sister, the beautiful Isis. When he became king he civilized the Egyptians, ended cannibalism, taught them farming, music, and a legal system. He is seen as a bearded man wearing white mummy wrappings. Wearing the atef crown and holding the symbols of supreme power, the flail and crook. His skin is green to represent vegetation or red to represent the earth. He wore a crown known as the 'atef', composed of the tall conical white crown of Upper Egypt with red plumes on each side. Supreme god and judge of the dead. The symbol of resurrection and eternal life. Provider of fertility and prosperity to the living. Osiris symbolized the creative forces of nature and the imperishability of life. Called the great benefactor of humanity, he brought to the people knowledge of agriculture and civilization. His brother Set, who ugly and very evil, and who hated his handsome
brother.
Set gathered many allies and planned how to kill Osiris. Set hosted a banquet. After food and much wine, Set had a beautifully ornate chest brought into the room and said it would go to the person who best fit within it. When Osiris climbed in, Set slammed the lid shut and sealed it with lead. The chest was thrown into the Nile, and Set became king of Egypt. The coffin was carried by the Nile to the delta town of Byblos, where it became enclosed in a tamarisk tree. Isis, the wife of Osiris, discovered the coffin and brought it back. Isis gave birth to Hours after his death, having impregnated herself with semen from his corpse. Seth took advantage of Isis's temporary absence on one occasion, cut the body to pieces, and cast them into the Nile. Isis searched the land for the body parts of Osiris, and was eventually
able to piece together his body, whole save for the penis, which had been
swallowed by a crocodile
Hours's mother was Isis who conceived him by her magical powers from the body of his murdered father Osiris. He eventually emerges the victor in a contest with Seth as to whom is the legitimate heir to the throne of Egypt. |
