St. Christopher

St. Christopher was a giant and a very strong man who lived by a fjord in a river and helped travelers cross to the other side. One day St. Christopher helped a child to cross over a river by carrying him on his shoulders. When they reached the middle of the river, the child on his shoulders began to feel as heavy as the entire world. It was then that Christopher learned the child was Christ and that he had been carrying the world. The child then disappeared.

Christ symbolizing the world itself, is of every race and culture, and comes when we least expect Him. Often very heavy and difficult to recognize. Christ gave us the command to love one another, and that love has no bounds and applies to all equally.

Stats St. Christopher's means Christ-bearer. . (Gr. christos, Christ, pherein, to bear. Lat. Christophorus, i.e. Christbearer). St. Christopher, Born at Canaan, was a martyr during the reign of Decius. His former (In the 1969 reform of the Roman calendar, St. Christopher and others were removed from the universal calendar. ) feast day is July 25. Died as a martyr about 251 AD.

St. Christopher was a large and powerfully built man who came upon a hermit who told him of the truth of God. St. Christopher lived beside a dangerous stream and would serve God by carrying people across it. One day he carried a small child across the stream; the child's weight nearly crushed him. When they arrived on the other side, the child revealed himself as Christ, and he was so heavy because he bore the weight of the world on himself. He then baptized him with water from the stream. The child ordered Christopher to fix his staff in the ground. The next morning it had grown into a palm-tree bearing fruit.

This miracle converted many people. Now the king of Dagnus of Samos was a vain and petty man and became enraged that so much honor went to St. Christopher instead to himself. St. Christopher was put into prison and, after many cruel torments, beheaded about 251 AD.

Prayer to Saint Christopher Dear Saint, you have inherited a beautiful name - Christbearer - as a result of a wonderful legend that while carrying people across a raging stream you also carried the Child Jesus. Teach us to be true Christbearers to those who do not know him. Protect all drivers who often transports those who bear Christ within them.
Amen.

St. Christopher is patron saint of travelers and is invoked against storms, plagues, etc.. Christopher is my own middle name and I keep a St. Christopher medal by my driver's license and so far have never been in an accident.
