Teddy Bear History

Many children have loved a very special "teddy", Their trusted best friend, Comforter, Protector against uncertainties and problems in life, Cute, Cuddly, Warm, Fuzzy, Companion who would never let them down.
About 100 years ago, the "Teddy bear" is named after President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. It probably started November 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt was hunting for bear in Mississippi. The hunting party brought a small bear cub to the camp. The president refused to shoot it because the animal did not have a chance to defend itself."

Well, the press picked up on it. A political cartoonist: Clifford Berryman, drew a cartoon showing how President Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear while hunting in Mississippi. Other cartoons and stories followed.
So that is how a bear became associated with President Theodore Roosevelt. In fact, Roosevelt adopted the bear cub as his mascot for a successful re-election campaign.

Margarete Steiff was a tough young German girl, with Polio, confined to a wheelchair. Margarete was vibrant, never letting her disability stop her. Margarete loved children, originally she made a small elephant, than other animals for the children loved to play with. Margarete's mother began getting orders for the toy animals and so Margarete set up a small factory in Giengen. In 1902 Margarete's nephew, Richard, made a present for her, a toy bear with a moving head and limbs, bigger and made of more expensive material than her others. The next year. the bear was brought to the Leipzig Fair. A New York import house representative of a was looking for something soft and cuddly. The little bear was presented to him, and was so delighted that he placed an order for 3,000, than another 3,000.

Well, Theodore Roosevelt's daughter was having a wedding, the caterer, was searching for an appropriate table decoration and seen one of Margarete Steiff's little bears looking at him through a New York shop's window. Morris Michtom, a Brooklyn candy store owner, also clams to have made the first "Teddy Bear" based upon Berryman's cartoon which he put in his shop window with the cartoon, and a notice saying "Teddy's Bear". Later Morris Michtom founded the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co. But I am going to go with Margarete Steiff, which seems more likely and is a nicer story anyway Now. everyone at the wedding including the President was delighted. A close friend of the family asked, "Say "Teddy" what species do these bears belong?" Roosevelt replied, "you really got me there so I think they must be a new species called Teddy Bears".

The original teddy bear, from 1903, was given to the Smithsonian by Teddy Roosevelt's grandson, Kermit. Today that bear is in the collections of our National Museum of American History."

Steiff redesigned their bears to create a more appealing face which was the standard by which all other Teddy Bears follow. And so the warm, cute, cuddly Teddy bear became a part of Americana, and a favorite of children (of all ages) ever after.
