Thanksgiving Day in America
Through out history some form of Thanksgiving was celebrated.
Ancient farmers thought that crops had spirits choosing to grow or die. Many ceremonies were to defeat or make peace with these spirits.

Greeks and Romans

Greeks worshiped the goddesses of corn and grains. Demeter "barley-mother" or "mother earth". had a festival: Thesmosphoria in the Autumn.
They feasted and made offerings to Demeter and she would grant them a good harvest.

Romans harvest festival: Cerelia, October 4th. Demeter is also known as Ceres (Roman) and sometimes Deo.

In 1621, after a devastating 1st year the Pilgrim's harvest was plentiful. with corn, fruits, vegetables. Fish meat were preserved winter. Fortunately They built homes raised enough crops to keep them during the winter, and were at peace with the Indians.

Governor, William Bradford, proclaimed a day of Thanksgiving that was to be shared by the colonists and Indians.
